CIRCLE-24: member profiles
- - network of internationally renowned photographers
- - world-wide exchange of information and ideas
- - collaborative projects across the world
- - seminars, workshops, lectures
- - world-wide exchange of exhibitions
Circle-24 began in l989 as an initiative of Robert Schilder, a professional photographer for over 25 years. His aim was to establish a worldwide exchange of information about new ideas and contemporary trends in photography. From our Centre in The Hague we organised collaborative projects with photographers throughout the world, held seminars, masterclass workshops and readings. Since 1991, Robert and the Circle have put together a comprehensive summary of Indian photography spanning 130 years "Another Way of Seeing" and introduced this to Museums in Europe. The Circle has presented more than fifteen international exhibitions and we have also exchanged exhibitions with major venues worldwide.
CULTURAL EXCHANGES
"We are convinced that the key to our future lies in understanding how other cultures communicate",says (founder) Robert Schilder.
CIRCLE-24 (1989 - 2013) served as a vital source of motivation to the international photographer and promotes valuable cultural exchange within the profession. We believe this process is very refreshing and revealing. Seeing how photographers from other countries and cultures operate is not only interesting for the observer, it also teaches the professional photographer, who must appeal to international markets, more about his or her own visual imagery.
An important part of our exchanges were the international exhibitions. After presenting Circle 24 works in the gallery in The Hague, we endeavour to introduce these artists at major museums and discerning galleries worldwide. Our opening show, Circle 24's group exhibition 'Photography for Sale' was received with great acclaim and interest, not only in The Netherlands but as far afield as Japan and Scandinavia. As a result, it has been accepted for exhibiting in Tokyo's Kodak Photo Salon, the National Museum of Photography, Denmark, Stockholm's House of Culture and galleries in Belgium and Scotland. CIRCLE-24 aimed to strengthen and broaden it's international contacts and advance intercultural exchange between artists.
SÁNDOR BENKÖ
- Hungary"What interests me most in photography are humans as personalities and social beings. I see the camera as a replacement for brush or pencil. Looking for new techniques and the related new ways of seeing also interest me, as much as the involvement of creativity and aesthetics. Just to make nice pictures, the creative demands suffice."

- UK'On the threshold of reality'
Some pictures are simple and complete inside my head from the beginning, but most of my images start with the inspiration of the objects. It may be something found in a junk shop, washed up on the beach near where I live or something from my past -wooden letters from a childhood game, my
palette from my art school days. I often assemble a collection of things and then have "play-time" to find the right composition,
juxtaposition and colours. Colour, of course, is very important. I love saturated colour and often use pure pigment on objects and
backgrounds. Sometimes a meaning will evolve that was not originally intended, but mostly I prefer people to read what they
like into the pictures or hopefully just enjoy them for their visual stimulation. Almost all these images were shot completely
in camera, although I am using the computer more and more and am very excited by its limitless possibilities. I am keen to have
the same technical excellence in anything computer generated as I hopefully attain with conventional photography.

CIRCLE-24 about: OCCHIOMAGICO ..
The Occhiomagico studio first started up in 1971. In the following eight years ´Occhiomagico´ occupied himself with expressive research through the elimination of the traditional visual codes and criteria of the photographic medium. In 1978 held first exhibition at the Diaframma Gallery, Milan. 1979 saw the birth of the Post and Neo-Modern movements in Italy. Occhiomagico took part theoretically and practically in multi-media groups, working with studio Alchimia and with architects as A Rossi, A Mendini and Ettore Sottsass Jr. In this period, Occhiomagico was commissioned to make 24 cover photographs for the magazine ´Domus´.
He organized a seminar in Venice about the contamination which photography must undergo to become "new photography". He also took on the artistic management of Italian pop group ´Matia Bazar´, where he experimented with new trends, bringing photography together with painting, music, video and fashion.
From 1985 he expanded on this idea and held several exhibitions in Europe on the theme of utopical environments, using three-dimensional settings; photographs, design objects, works of art and ´three-dimensional music´. Since 1989 he has been working on the intimacy of man. Occhiomagico remarks on the human condition: " The man, alone, in front of the universe tries to conquer fear. He is assailed with anxiety every time a star falls. The man, with other men, tries to keep peace and is assailed with war".
KI HO PARK
Kistone Photography -South KoreaCIRCLE-24 recommends Ki Ho PARK ..
Over 10 years, the pictures taken by Ki Ho Park made living into art itself, and the public thus love him for it. Year after year, month after month, his photographs have remained signature, often an inspiration for his contemporaries.
This portfolio-represent only a small portion of the hundreds of thousands of photographs were published since his introduction in 1985. But even in brief, they signal a distinct, finest tradition.
Through his photographs, our vision of the world expanded to include people, place and ideas that everyone didn´t already know but should. He introduced us to people who ran distant social circles across east across west and in between.
From the start, Ki Ho Park has sought after the truth in life. His graduating thesis at Rhode island School of Design showed his early understanding of compassion. Whomever and wherever his subjects were, such as his early works of refugees in Thailand and that search for reunion with relatives, Ki Ho Park made sure that nowhere would those dreams come truer than in his photographs.
Ki Ho Park´s turning point came while he worked at the Magnum photo agency in New York. In New York, he saw through the eyes of Bruce Davidson, Cartier Bresson and other Magnum photographers whose work was published for audiences too accustomed to seeing the good (not enough bad). With Bruce Davidson Ki Ho Park work grew to know how to conjure insightful images for photography whatever the subject was. This experience was his finest asset.
Today Ki Ho Park shoots regularly to such demanding clients as AT&T, Businessweek, Fortune, Forbes, Sam Sung and Deawoo. His compassion and sensitive eyes for visual perception has earned him reputation that clients come back year after year.
